Ways Boomers Can Celebrate Positive Thinking Day

think positive. feel positive. live positive.

Friday the 13th is a GOOD DAY, especially when it falls in September. Since 2003, the 13th of September has been designated “Positive Thinking Day,” to help people overcome kevidekatriaphobia (fear of the number 13), and paraskevidekatriaphobia (the irrational fear of Friday the 13th).

Active Adults have many reasons to CELEBRATE the day (and every day, regardless of what the calendar says). Celebrating Positive Thinking can be summed up in a handful of positive quotes:

“It takes no more time to see the good side of life than the bad.” ~ Jimmy Buffett

If life seems overwhelming, change your perspective, beginning with the first thing you say to yourself in the morning: “It’s going to be a great day!” While it may feel silly, psychologists have proven that giving yourself this seven-word pep talk sets you up to see the good in whatever comes your way that day.

“There are two ways to live your life: one is as though nothing is a miracle; the other is as though everything is.” ~ Albert Einstein

While Einstein is credited with numerous discoveries and inventions throughout his lifetime, he said that play provided him with a creative way of viewing every situation. In fact, Einstein insisted that allowing children to play was perhaps more important to their development than book-learning, and the same could be said for adults. Take some time to play in the garden, in the kitchen, or with friends, and discover the miracles of plants and creatures in your yard, a new recipe, and the company of people who inspire you.

“Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.” ~ John Lennon

Each day, take a moment to share a smile with someone who needs one (it costs you nothing, but its value is immense!); read or watch positive articles, stories, television programs, and films; spend time engaged in a hobby – or taking a nap! Activities that elevate your mood have a positive impact on your health and wellness.

“Do your little bit of good where you are. It is those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” ~ Desmond Tutu

Spending time with positive people, being kind to others, and practicing gratitude have been shown to lower your risk of stress, heart disease, and depression; increase your life span, even build up your resistance to certain illnesses.
