Lawn & Garden Month a Breeze for Active Adults

April showers bring the flowers in May and June and beyond, and for Active Adults who call one of our Windsong communities home, celebrating April’s Lawn & Garden Month is easy and fun!

First, the least-favorite part of Lawn & Garden Month is the lawnmower (and edger and weed-eater). Equipment takes up so much room in the garage, then there’s gas and oil and changing the spark plugs and getting the blades sharpened...

Windsong homeowners will tell you that they ditched the lawnmower in the moving sale (and good riddance!), as the lawn and common area plantings are maintained as part of the HOA dues. That means that the grass, shrubs and seasonal flowers at the community’s entrance, around the clubhouse, and in pocket parks are taken care of for you – as are those elements in your front yard.

Garden enthusiasts get to spend more time planting container gardens or creating magical garden retreats in their private courtyards or patio areas. Instead of spending a lot of green on products to green the lawn, they spend their time perusing and choosing flowers, vegetables, and shrubs for their “secret garden” getaways that are visible from the kitchen and dining room, and windows in the guest room/office and great room, as well!

Do birds, butterflies, and the like make your heart flutter? Choose landscape accents that draw these spring and summer lovelies to your garden party, with bird houses, feeders, and baths; as well as plants – such as butterfly bushes, coneflowers, daylilies, and more – that attract your favorite feathered and fluttery friends.

Garden centers are full of springtime blooms and accent pieces this time of year. Be sure to add seating that is appropriate for wildlife-watching, as well as for entertaining friends, reading a good book, or catching a cat nap in the courtyard.

If you’d rather grow your garden from seed, check out the Master Gardeners’ “Seed Libraries” throughout the region. (In Cherokee County, you can find Seed Libraries at the Sequoyah Regional and Hickory Flat public libraries in Canton; in Cobb County, Seed Libraries are located at Switzer, Gritters, and Stratford libraries in Marietta; and the Dallas Public Library features a Seed Library in Paulding County.)

At Windsong, we design and build homes and communities that are comfortable and inviting both inside and out, with high standards for quality, plenty of natural light, energy-saving features, and amenities that invite homeowners to rekindle hobbies or develop new ones while meeting neighbors who become lifelong friends.
