Active Adults in Social Circles

Just in time for graduations, weddings, and summer holidays, and with vaccines available, the CDC announced that it appears safe to relax restrictions for visiting people outside one’s immediate home, for the first time in 14 months. That sound you probably heard is the collective exhale of relief… along with a quickening heartbeat: we can see (and hug!) our children and grandchildren; we can visit friends again!

Of course, just as you would not run a marathon right after having a cast removed, guidelines are in place to ensure we continue to watch the pandemic fade into history.

“Returning to normal” may mean different things to different people, so consider the following:

• Assess your personal health risk, as well as that of your friends, family, and those with whom you will come in contact after a visit.
• Re-grow your social circle slowly and continue to exercise caution.
• Consider meeting outdoors with family or friends whom you have not seen in-person for the past 14 months.
• Keep an eye on the statistics in your county, state, and region, as well as those in places you plan to visit, if you are going to travel.
• Practice empathy with those who may still decide to wear a mask, social-distance, or continue to stay home for a while longer.
